Where Ancient Forests Meet the Open Savannah and Every Frame Tells a Story.
Imagine crouching in the misty green silence of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, your camera raised, as a silverback mountain gorilla turns to hold your gaze. Then, four days later, you’re lying flat on the golden Maasai Mara plains at dawn, lens trained on a lioness padding through the amber grass. This is not one safari, this is two of Africa’s greatest wildlife experiences fused into a single, unforgettable 12-day journey.
Otter African Safaris’ 12-Day Uganda and Kenya Photography Safari is designed from the ground up for photographers: the composition-conscious, the light-chasing, the patient storytellers who know that the greatest images are earned, not rushed. From the equatorial rainforests of southwestern Uganda to the sweeping acacia horizons of the Maasai Mara, this itinerary puts you in the right place at the right hour, with expert guidance every step of the way.
Day 1 Arrival in Entebbe, Uganda: The Adventure Begins
Your safari story opens in Entebbe, the garden city draped along the northern shore of Lake Victoria. Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your Otter African Safaris representative will meet you and transfer you to your lakeside lodge. As the sun sinks behind the papyrus reeds and the calls of African fish eagles echo across the water, allow yourself to exhale. Tonight is for rest, preparation, and anticipation. Brief your guide on your photography goals.
Day 2 Entebbe to Bwindi: Into the Heart of the Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, you depart for one of Africa’s most dramatic drives southwest through the rolling hills of Ankole cattle country, past terraced tea plantations and crater lake valleys that glitter like scattered mirrors. The landscape shifts and deepens as you climb toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse forests on Earth.
Attend an evening briefing on gorilla trekking protocols and photography etiquette within the forest. Sleep to the sound of Afromontane birdsong and prepare yourself: tomorrow you will come face-to-face with our closest living relatives.
Days 3 & 4 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Gorilla Trekking & Photography
These two days rank among the most profound wildlife encounters available anywhere on the planet. Each morning, your ranger-guide leads a small group of trekkers into the dense, cathedral-green interior of Bwindi in search of habituated mountain gorilla families. The forest is alive, hornbills crash through the canopy, forest elephants leave fresh tracks in the mud, and L’Hoest’s monkeys peer down from above.
When you find the gorillas, you will have one precious hour in their presence. A silverback at rest in dappled light. A mother cradling her newborn infant. Juveniles wrestling in a tangle of leaves and laughter. These are not images you manufacture; they unfold around you, and your job is simply to be ready.
The second trekking day offers a different gorilla family and a different story entirely. No two treks are ever the same.
Day 5 Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth National Park: The Savannah Awakens
Leaving the forest behind, you descend toward the western arm of the Great Rift Valley and Queen Elizabeth National Park, a landscape of total contrast. Flat-topped acacia trees, vast papyrus swamps, and open savannah plains stretch to the horizon, broken only by volcanic cones and the shimmering blue line of the Kazinga Channel.
Afternoon brings your first savannah game drive in Uganda. Herds of Uganda kob graze in the golden light. Warthogs sprint for cover.
Day 6 Queen Elizabeth: Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise & Game Drives
Rise before dawn for a game drive in the cool morning hours when predators are still active, and the light is warm and dimensional. Then, mid-morning, board a boat for the Kazinga Channel cruise, one of Uganda’s supreme wildlife photography experiences.
The channel, linking Lake Edward and Lake George, teems with life in extraordinary concentration. Hippos wallow by the hundreds, their pink ears twitching above the waterline. Nile crocodiles bask on sandy banks, still as sculptures. Cape buffalo drink at the water’s edge, flanked by clouds of yellow-billed oxpeckers. African skimmers skim the glassy surface with geometric precision.
Everything is closed. Everything is calm. And the morning light coming low and warm across the water is a photographer’s dream.
Day 7 Queen Elizabeth to Entebbe, Flight to Nairobi
A final morning in Queen Elizabeth before the transfer back to Entebbe for your evening flight to Nairobi, Kenya. Arrive at your Nairobi hotel in time for dinner and a good night’s rest. Uganda has been extraordinary, but Kenya is calling.
Day 8 Nairobi to Maasai Mara: The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth
A short morning flight carries you southwest from Nairobi into the vast bowl of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
The Maasai Mara is arguably the world’s greatest wildlife photography destination, and for very good reason. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle circulate between the Mara and Serengeti in an ancient, seasonal choreography. Big cats, lion, leopard, and cheetah hunt in broad daylight. Elephants move in stately family groups. And the skies are painted twice daily with colours that defy description.
Check into your Mara camp, carefully selected by Otter African Safaris for its ideal game-drive positioning and head straight out for your first afternoon game drive. The Mara does not wait.
Days 9 & 10 Maasai Mara: Full Days in the Wild
Two full days dedicated entirely to photography in the Mara ecosystem. Each day follows the rhythm that photographers prize: an early morning departure into the golden dawn, a mid-morning break at camp, then back out again for the active late afternoon until the last available light.
Your guide, a seasoned Mara expert with an intuitive understanding of animal behaviour, will read the landscape and position the vehicle for the shots that matter. A cheetah coalition scanning for Thomson’s gazelle. A leopard hauling prey into a sausage tree. A river crossing, when hundreds of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters in an explosion of chaos, noise, and spray.
Between drives, review your images, discuss settings and technique with your guide, and rest for the next session.
Day 11 Maasai Mara: Balloon Safari & Final Game Drive
Today opens before sunrise with a dawn hot air balloon flight over the Maasai Mara, an experience that transforms the way you see this landscape. Drifting silently above the plains at first light, herds of elephant and buffalo move below you like slow rivers. The Mara River glints silver. The horizon blazes.
After landing, a champagne bush breakfast awaits in the open savannah, a classic Mara ritual. Use the evening for image editing, a sundowner at the Mara escarpment, and a celebratory dinner with your fellow photographers.
Day 12 Departure: Your Story, Fully Told
A final sunrise. A last cup of coffee with the Mara stretched before you. Then the short flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, onward connection to Jomo Kenyatta International, and your flight home, your camera full, your mind quiet, your story complete.
