Fishing Safaris in Uganda: The Ultimate Guide

Experience the Thrill of Fishing Safaris in Uganda

A fishing safari in Uganda offers an unforgettable experience for anglers and adventure seekers alike. Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa, is home to the mighty Nile Perch—one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. Whether a seasoned fisherman or a beginner, a guided fishing safari presents an exciting opportunity to test your skills against these incredible giants while soaking in Uganda’s breathtaking natural beauty.

At Otter Africa Safaris, we have been organizing half-day and full-day catch-and-release Nile Perch fishing trips for over 15 years. With our expert skippers, extensive local knowledge, and top-tier fishing equipment, we ensure you have the best chance of landing an impressive catch.

Best Time for a Fishing Safari in Uganda

Fishing is available year-round on Lake Victoria, except during the full moon and the April-May rainy season when fish activity is less predictable. Planning your trip around these factors increases your chances of a successful and enjoyable fishing excursion.

Target Fish & Fishing Techniques

The primary species sought after on a fishing safari is the Nile Perch, which typically weighs between 5 to 25 kg, though much larger catches have been recorded. Other species such as tilapia and catfish may also be encountered. The most effective fishing method is trolling with artificial lures, a technique well-suited for catching these large predators.

Fishing Boats & Equipment

We provide speedboats ranging from 18 to 30 feet (6 to 10 meters) long, all equipped with twin outboard engines for smooth and efficient navigation. Each boat accommodates a group, but only four people can fish simultaneously. For smaller fishing parties of two to three anglers, we also offer a 24-foot-long fibreglass canoe powered by an outboard engine.

Onboard Facilities & Safety Gear:

  • Overhead sun canopy for shade.
  • Raincoats (for protection against lake spray).
  • Mobile phones for communication.
  • Life jackets and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Fire extinguisher for safety.
  • Cooler box to store cold drinks.

We supply all necessary fishing equipment, including rods, reels, and lures, but anglers are welcome to bring their gear. Please note that lost or damaged lures cost $20–$25 per piece.

Meeting Point & Departure Information

Fishing safaris begin at Banga Beach in Entebbe, which offers secure parking and a convenient jetty for departure and return. Transportation to and from the jetty can be arranged upon request for guests staying in Entebbe or Kampala.

Fishing Safari Timings:

  • Half-day trips: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM (approx. 4 hours).
  • Full-day trips: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (approx. 8 hours).

Fishing is conducted in sheltered bays and nearby islands after a 30-45 minute boat ride from Entebbe. The choice of fishing spots depends on weather conditions and fish activity.

What to Bring on Your Fishing Safari

Uganda’s equatorial climate means the sun can be intense, so preparation is key to a comfortable fishing trip. We recommend bringing:

  • Sun protection: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Footwear: Sandals or water-resistant shoes.
  • Bug repellent to guard against insects.
  • A camera to capture your catch and the stunning scenery.
  • Binoculars for birdwatching (Lake Victoria is a prime birding destination!).
  • Light, breathable clothing (T-shirts and shorts are ideal).
  • A rain jacket for unexpected weather changes.
  • A light sweater or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings.
