Walk With Kings in the Wild
Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most popular savannah destination, offers a safari experience unlike any other lion trekking. Unlike traditional game drives, lion trekking allows you to step off the beaten path and track one of Africa’s most iconic predators on foot or in proximity with an expert researcher. At Otter African Safaris, we proudly offer this immersive experience to our guests looking to combine conservation and adventure in the heart of the African wilderness.
What is a Lion Trekking Safari?
Lion trekking is a research-based activity conducted in partnership with the Uganda Carnivore Program (UCP), a conservation initiative based in the Ishasha and Kasenyi sectors of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The trek involves tracking and monitoring collared lions, contributing to ongoing scientific research and conservation, while giving visitors a rare opportunity to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat, often from surprisingly close range.
This is not a high-speed chase or a routine safari; it’s a carefully guided, educational, and conservation-focused experience where travellers get a behind-the-scenes look at lion behaviour, pride dynamics, and the threats these predators face in the wild.
What to Expect During a Lion Trek
The Experience
- Briefing: Your day begins at dawn with a short briefing from the Uganda Carnivore Program team. You’ll learn about lion behaviour, conservation challenges, and how tracking works.
- Tracking: Researchers use radio telemetry to locate collared lions. From there, you head out with a ranger and researcher either in a 4×4 vehicle or partly on foot, depending on the lions’ location and terrain.
- Up-close Observation: Once located, you’ll be able to observe the lions up close, sometimes within 20-50 meters, all while remaining safe under the watchful guidance of experts.
-
Education & Data Collection: You may assist with data recording, photography, or even learn how to identify individuals by their whisker patterns and scars.
Duration:
About 2–3 hours, depending on lion activity and location.
Fitness Level:
Moderate. While most of the tracking is by vehicle, some light walking over uneven terrain may be involved.
Why Choose Lion Trekking?
Conservation in Action
Your participation directly contributes to lion conservation. Part of the proceeds from the activity go to supporting UCP’s vital work, including anti-poaching efforts, community education, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation.
Unparalleled Photography Opportunities
Because the activity is not rushed and guided by researchers who understand animal behaviour, you’re likely to get incredible close-up shots of lions in their natural behaviour, lounging, grooming, or hunting.
Educational Value
This is one of the most informative safari activities in East Africa. It bridges tourism with science and gives visitors a deeper appreciation of the role predators play in ecosystems.
Lion Conservation Challenges
Despite their status as apex predators, lions face increasing threats:
- Habitat encroachment due to human settlement and agriculture.
- Poaching and retaliation killings in response to livestock predation.
- Lack of genetic diversity due to isolated populations.
By joining a lion trek with Otter African Safaris, you’re not only seeing lions, you’re supporting their survival.
When is the Best Time to Go on a Lion Trekking Safari?
Lion trekking can be done year-round, but the dry seasons (December–February and June–August) offer better visibility and ease of tracking. Early mornings are best for activity, as lions are more mobile before the heat of the day sets in.
