12-Day Kenya and Uganda Wildlife Adventure Safari
May 13, 2026Uganda and Rwanda Wildlife and Adventure
Imagine seeing the gaze of a mountain gorilla in the heart of an old jungle. seeing hippos bellowing from the shallows below as the sun melts into Lake Mburo. Breathing in the cold mist as I stand at the border of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, I am aware that one of the planet’s most majestic and endangered species is just beyond those green trees. This is not a holiday. This is a transformation.
The 12-Day Uganda and Rwanda Wildlife Adventure Safari by Otter African Safaris is the ultimate East African odyssey, weaving together two of Africa’s most extraordinary countries into one breathtaking journey. From the rolling savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the volcanic highlands of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, every single day of this safari is designed to leave you speechless.
Day 1: Arrival in Kampala, The Pearl of Africa Welcomes You
Your adventure begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport. A warm Otter African Safaris representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Kampala, Uganda’s vibrant, hill-draped capital city. Tonight, settle in, enjoy a welcome dinner, and let the sounds of the city, the boda bodas, the laughter, and the distant drums signal that Africa has you now.
Day 2: Kampala to Kibale Forest Into the Realm of the Primates
After breakfast, your safari vehicle heads west through Uganda’s lush countryside, passing terraced hillsides, banana plantations, and villages that feel untouched by time. By afternoon, you arrive at Kibale National Park, home to the largest population of chimpanzees in East Africa and a staggering 13 primate species. Check into your forest lodge as the canopy erupts with birdsong overhead.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Face to Face with Our Closest Cousins
This is a morning you will never forget. Rising before dawn, you join your expert ranger guide deep into the misty Kibale Forest on a chimpanzee tracking experience. Kibale’s chimps are habituated to human presence, meaning you get genuinely intimate encounters watching them groom, play, swing through the canopy and vocalise in that spine-tingling call-and-response that echoes for miles. Spend up to an hour observing them in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, unwind with a guided nature walk along the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a birder’s paradise.
Kibale Forest is one of the top destinations for chimpanzee trekking in Africa and for good reason.
Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park The Savannah Awakens
Depart after breakfast and drive south through the stunning Kasese valley toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most visited park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. En route, stop at the Equator, a must for the classic photo straddling two hemispheres. After checking in, an afternoon game drive through the Kasenyi Plains reveals the park’s extraordinary diversity: elephants ambling in family groups, Uganda kob sparring in the golden grass, buffalo herds stretching to the horizon, and if fortune smiles, a leopard draped lazily across an acacia branch.
Day 5: The Kazinga Channel Boat Safari & Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions
Start the day with a legendary Kazinga Channel boat cruise, an experience unlike any other in Africa. The 40-kilometre channel connecting Lakes Edward and George is one of the continent’s greatest wildlife corridors. From the deck, you glide past hippos yawning in the shallows, Nile crocodiles basking on sandy banks, enormous buffalo herds coming to drink, and literally hundreds of bird species, including the iconic African fish eagle, pink-backed pelicans, and pied kingfishers.
In the afternoon, drive south to the Ishasha Sector, globally famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behaviour found almost nowhere else on Earth. As dusk falls over the fig trees, look up. Those silhouettes resting on the branches? Lions.
Day 6: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest The Gates of the Gorillas
Today you enter legend. The drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park takes you through some of Uganda’s most dramatic highland scenery, with terraced ridges, misty valleys, and small communities going about their morning rituals. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi shelters roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it the single most important conservation site for this critically endangered species.
Check in to your lodge perched above the forest canopy and attend an evening briefing with your guide. Tomorrow, the gorillas await.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi, The Pinnacle of All African Safaris
There is nothing else like this on Earth.
Dressed in hiking gear, walking sticks in hand, your group sets off at dawn into the forest with a ranger and a tracker. The terrain is steep and the vegetation dense; this is the Impenetrable Forest, but every breathless step forward is worth it. When the lead tracker raises a fist and whispers “gorillas,” your heart stops.
A silverback, easily 200 kilograms of raw, gentle power, sits just metres away, his family grazing around him. Mothers nurse infants. Juveniles tumble and wrestle. A young male beats his chest, more theatrics than threat. You have one hour with them. Sixty minutes that will redefine everything you thought you knew about wildlife, connection, and what it means to share this planet with another intelligent being.
Day 8: Bwindi to Kigali Crossing into Rwanda
After a leisurely breakfast and a farewell to Uganda’s misty highlands, your driver crosses the border into Rwanda, Le Pays des Mille Collines, the Land of a Thousand Hills. The landscape shifts dramatically as you wind through terraced volcanic highlands toward Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest, safest, and most dynamic capital cities.
Arrive in Kigali by evening. Tonight, a city tour and dinner in one of Kigali’s acclaimed restaurants introduces you to Rwandan culture, a nation reborn, resilient, and increasingly celebrated as one of Africa’s greatest success stories.
Day 9: Kigali Genocide Memorial & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Morning is dedicated to one of Africa’s most profound sites, the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Understanding Rwanda’s history only deepens your appreciation of the extraordinary country unfolding before you.
After lunch, transfer northwest to Ruhengeri (Musanze), gateway to Volcanoes National Park, the original home of gorilla research pioneer Dian Fossey. Check into your luxury lodge in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes.
Day 10: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Dian Fossey’s Legacy Lives On
A second gorilla encounter? Yes. And equally unforgettable.
Rwanda’s gorilla trekking experience in the Virunga Mountains is considered by many to be the most iconic in the world, the very terrain that inspired Fossey’s groundbreaking conservation work. Today, you trek through bamboo forest and volcanic highland meadows to meet yet another habituated gorilla family. The Volcanoes National Park is home to several large groups with well-known silverbacks, each with their own personality and story.
In the afternoon, optional: visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund research centre or the grave site of Fossey herself, a poignant pilgrimage for any wildlife lover.
Day 11: Golden Monkey Trekking & Cultural Experience
Not all of the Virungas’ magic belongs to gorillas. This morning, trek into bamboo forests in search of the golden monkey, one of Africa’s rarest and most enchanting primates, found only in this high-altitude volcanic zone. Playful, quick, and brilliantly coloured, these monkeys are a photographer’s delight.
The afternoon is yours to immerse in Rwandan culture. These human moments often become the memories that last longest.
Day 12: Return to Kigali, Farewell to East Africa
