Day 1-2: The Journey Begins

Your adventure opens in Kampala, Uganda’s vibrant, hill-straddling capital. After your arrival and welcome briefing with your Otter African Safaris guide, you’ll have a full day to soak in the city’s energy and visit the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual burial ground of Buganda kings.

That evening, over a cold Nile Special beer and a plate of rolex, Uganda’s beloved street food of egg and vegetable rolled in a chapati, your guide will brief you on what lies ahead. The excitement is already building.

Days 3–4: Queen Elizabeth National Park Lions in the Trees

Queen Elizabeth is one of only two places on earth where you can witness tree-climbing lions. These remarkable cats have adapted the unusual habit of draping themselves across the branches of fig trees in the Ishasha sector, and spotting one, perhaps a whole pride suspended lazily above the grass, is an image that defies expectation.

Morning and afternoon game drives reveal elephants, Cape buffalo, Uganda kob, warthogs, and enormous Nile crocodiles basking on the banks of the Kazinga Channel. A boat cruise along the channel at golden hour may well be the most densely packed wildlife spectacle of the entire trip hippos lolling by the hundreds, marabou storks standing sentinel, fish eagles calling overhead.

Day 5-6: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Face to Face with Gorillas

Nothing in travel quite prepares you for Bwindi. As your vehicle winds through the terraced hills of southwestern Uganda, the forest rises before you, ancient, cathedral-dark, impossibly green. This is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, and it is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

On the morning of Day 6, your gorilla trek begins. Led by expert Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you push through the undergrowth, following a trail of bent bamboo and fresh dung. The trek can take anywhere from one to six hours, depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight, and that uncertainty is part of the magic.

Then, without warning, you hear a soft hoot. Branches sway. And there they are. Youngsters tumble through the undergrowth. A mother nurses her infant. For a full, extraordinary hour, your permitted viewing time, you are in their world, not the other way around. This is the moment that travellers describe for the rest of their lives.

Day 7: Transfer to Kigali, A Day of Reflection

Today is a travel day as you cross into Rwanda and overnight in Kigali before flying to Arusha. Kigali itself surprises many visitors with its cleanliness, safety, and excellent coffee culture.

Day 8: Arusha Gateway to Tanzania’s Safari Circuit

A short flight brings you into Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania, sitting in the shadow of Mount Meru. After settling into your lodge, the afternoon is yours to explore the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre, browse Maasai jewellery and Tingatinga paintings, or rest in preparation for the game-rich days ahead.

Day 9: Lake Manyara National Park Flamingos & Forest Elephants

Just two hours from Arusha, Lake Manyara National Park punches well above its size. The alkaline lake attracts hundreds of thousands of flamingos in season, turning the shoreline shocking pink. The mahogany forest at the park entrance harbours large elephant herds so habituated to vehicles that you can observe them from metres away, their rumbles reverberating through your chest.

Manyara is also famous for its own population of tree-climbing lions (a wonderful echo of Queen Elizabeth), enormous hippo pods, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife, with over 400 recorded species.

Day 10-11: Serengeti National Park The Greatest Show on Earth

If there is one name that is synonymous with the African safari, it is the Serengeti. Meaning “endless plain” in the Maasai language, this 14,750-square-kilometre ecosystem is the stage for the Great Migration, the cyclical movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, in an unending search for water and pasture.

Over two days of morning and afternoon game drives in customised 4×4 vehicles with pop-up roofs, you’ll cover the Seronera valley for big cat sightings, the western corridor for river crossings (June–August), and the northern reaches for the thick concentrations of predators that follow the migration. Your guide’s knowledge of animal behaviour and tracking transforms every game drive into a masterclass.

Day 12: Ngorongoro Crater, Africa’s Eden

Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater is like dropping into another world. 

The Ngorongoro Crater floor is one of the best places on the African continent to see the Big Five in a single day. Lions laze in the open. Elephant bulls wander between the swamp and the grassland. A crash of black rhino, critically endangered and thrillingly rare, may be spotted near the Lerai Forest. Hippos wallow in the soda lakes. And the ever-present wildebeest move like a slow-breathing organism across the floor.

A packed lunch on the crater floor, surrounded by all of this, is a meal you will never forget.

Day 13: Arusha Farewells and Flight Home

Your final morning offers time for last-minute shopping in Arusha, perhaps a hand-carved wooden giraffe, a beaded Maasai bracelet, or a bag of Kilimanjaro coffee to remember the journey by. After a farewell lunch with your Otter guide, you transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flights.

You leave Africa different from the way you arrived. A little quieter, perhaps. More grateful. With the gorilla’s gaze still living somewhere behind your eyes.
